About Park Cottage
Park Cottage is a former rectory within Galloway House Estate.
In 1740 the Earl of Galloway chose this exceptionally sheltered bay to build his mansion and develop a Capability Brown inspired garden. You can still make out the avenue where the rector rode his pony to the mansion house chapel. The stable is now our log store.
Today our visitors can enjoy 23 private acres of this listed landscape with the sea and venerable trees to the east and open fields and the old laundry just visible to the south.
Enjoy the summerhouse and watch the fishing boats sailing by or perhaps catch a glimpse of the abundant wildlife in the garden.
“Look out for the pheasants that visited the bird feeder morning and evenings daily! Look out for the hares that charge around the garden”, wrote the Bramley Family.
“A very peaceful time away from the rat race-with loads of wildlife on the doorstep. Fox came most nights in the field at dusk. Watched him mousing and jumping up catching moths? Caught a full bucket full of crabs off the breakwater. They like bacon! All put back so we could catch them again next day! Thank you. It is always great to be here!” The Faber Family.
Head to the safe, sandy beach at Rigg Bay. A level, easy walk along the beautiful coastal path. Then onwards to Cruggleton Castle ruin – a very rewarding walk with magnificent cliff-top views. A detour on your homeward journey will bring you through delightful Galloway House Gardens and back to enjoy some of the clearest night skies in the UK.
“The light was fantastic in all weathers” The Gielers and friends.
“Brought in the New Year on the beach. Made the most of the long dark nights stargazing -- spectacular shooting stars." The Stewart Family and friends.
“Utterly amazing full moon over the bay. Sea like glass and reflection was magical!” The Ward Family
